Volume dirty Chkdsk still on

... the blue screen that reads the volume is dirty and runs CHKDSK. After about 12 hours, the CHKDSK is still showing 0% for step 2 . I and serveral others have run chkdsk and it takes a very long time. 13 hours may not be enought for the 500GB drive. CHKDSK checks "unused" sectors as well as "used" ones. So the amount of data on the drive does not ...... the important updates and one optional update related to the intel chipset in my computer. I rebooted after the updates were installed, successfully according to Windows. What happens when I reboot? Chkdsk runs. Why? The only other things I had installed were Microsoft Secrity Essentials and Malwarebyte's Anti Malware. .... necessarily a bad thing... it's just making sure that the hard drive is good, no bad sectors. etc. As long as it only did it once, then all is good.
