HELP blue screen after login as root

I have a blank blue screen after login as root, and don't knnow how to get back to the normal screen with the menu bar on the bottom of screen.Just a blank, blue screen. Even after waiting for long nothing changes. Occasionally, the press "Ctrl+Alt+Delete" to login prompt comes. And on entering the login/pass, again blank ...After last nights maintenance on a Vista HP Pavilion I successfully rebooted and proceeded to login under an ID with Administrator Authority.
